Poor Sleep Habits Put You at Risk For Obesity

Sleep plays and important role in your health. During sleep cellular repair and muscle growth occurs, growth hormones are released, and information is organized in the brain. So yes, those 7 to 8 hours at night are essential for more than just maintaining your beauty.

There is a growing body of scientific evidence linking the amount of sleep that people get to the amount that they weigh. There is clear link between sleep and glucose regulation, metabolism, cortisol levels, hunger, and the release of the hormones leptin and ghrelin. Leptin and ghrelin are nicknamed the “hunger hormones” because they do just that- regulate appetite and hunger.

Here’s how it works. Ghrelin is the hormone that tells you when to eat so when you are sleep-deprived, your body releases more ghrelin and you EAT MORE. Leptin is the hormone that tells you to stop eating so when you are sleep deprived, your body releases less leptin and you EAT MORE. To make matters worse, when you are up late comfort foods and processed meals and snacks are more accessible. So you are eating more of the unhealthiest types of foods.

Tip #1

  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening

  • If you are hungry at bedtime eat a small healthy snack instead of a large meal

Tip #3

  • Establish a relaxing bedtime ritual like reading book, listening to music, or taking a bubble bath

Tip #4

  • Set a sleep schedule that allows you to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night

Tip #5

  • Don’t use your bed for watching TV or for doing work, use it for sleep and sex only

Tip #6

  • Exercise regularly
